Speech Competition

Congratulations to all the class on the presentation of their speech.

We had 2 clear winners, Amy Lampp and Jasmine Niall, who will represent us in the Senior Team speech Final on Tuesday. Well done girls.

It's hard to get up in front of your peers and speak. Many students have improved on the use of expression, pace and tone of their voice because of the poetry presentations we did last term.

The next thing the children have to work on is to ensure they have a fantastic end to their speech to ensure the audience can take away the message they want to give.

Well done to you all. Great work!!!

International Language Week - Brazil

Maria is a PHD student at IVABS, Massey Univeristy. Maria is from Sao Jose do Rio Preto in Brazil. Brazil has a population of 191 million people. The Brazil flag has the Southern Cross on it just like the New Zealand flag does as we are both in the Southern Hemisphere. In Brazil they call New Zealand – Nova Zelandia.

Maria taught us how to play Brincadeira de roda, a circle game. It was fun! Maria speaks English and Portugese and is taking Spanish classes.

Maria taught us some phrases in Portugese:

“How are you?” – Como vai voce?”

“I am fine” – Eu estou bem.

International Language Week - Malaysia

Izzati comes from Penang in Malaysia. Malaysia has 13 states (it use to have 14 but Singapore is now on its own). That is why the Malaysian flag has 14 lines on it and 14 points on its star. Izzati is from a place called Penang. Malaysia has a population of 28 million people.
Izzati bought some Malaysian "Mashed Ball Banana Fritters" for us to try.

International Language Week - India

Preet Singh is a PHD student in IVABS, Massey University. Preet came to visit us and teach us about his homeland – India. India has 28 states, 1.2 billion people, and 18 official languages. Preet speaks 3 languages – English, Hindi and Punjabi. His religion is Sikhism. This means that you follow truthful living. Preet and other Sikhs don’t cut their hair as they believe God made them this way and that they should keep this form. He wears a turban to maintain his hair.

We learnt some of Preet’s Punjabi language: Hello – Sat Sri Akal How are you? – Ki haa hai tuhada

The boys in the class learnt some Bhangra dancing.

Message from Connor

When we went to Paoli in Indiana we went to a Nature Centre and i got to hold a corn snake. It is called a corn snake because it is the color of corn. the pattern of colors goes like this. It starts with a light yellow, following close behind with dark yellow then white under the bottom. I was really curious about it and asked lots of questions and usually no one is allowed to hold them but I asked and the lady said yes. It felt a bit like a fish scaley and sticky.

Tell everyone in LC11 I said hi. I am having a great time here in America.

From Connor

Sergeant Major Fairbairn

Sergeant Major Fairbairn (AKA Jared's Dad) visited LC11 today. He has recently got back from 6 months in Afghanistan with the NZ Army. He showed us lots of pictures of his trip and told us a lot about school life in Afghanistan.

Did you know over there they only go to school from 8am - 12 noon. Then they go home and help on the farm. One school he visited had 130 children at it and they had 1 swing and no field. They love to play soccer and volleyball.

In this photo he is wearing a Afghan hat and the other photo is of the medal he was given after his "Tour of Duty".

Thanks Sergeant Major!!

LC11 had a real American visitor this week. Tracy is over from Tennessee visiting Papa Nathan and helping with Missionary work. Mrs Kenyon has emailed her and we hope to get to know her and her class when we return to school in Term2.

Daina's Camp Recount

My heart was beating faster and faster. All I could see was the blurey waterslide. I placed my really slippery mat on the water sloped waterslide. Jasmine sat on the back of my mat. I could feel the water trickle down behind me. We slowly moved forward. All of a sudden we were off like a racing car. I felt like I was superman. We just got faster and faster! The water kept flying into my eyes. "I can't see. Ahh". Oh no we were going to ride straight into that disgusting mud puddle at the end of the waterslide. Splash! "Yuck. I'm doing that again".
